Filoli Garden is a historic estate located in Woodside, California, about 30 miles south of San Francisco. The estate was built by William Bowers Bourn II, a wealthy gold-mining magnate, and his wife Agnes Moody Bourn in 1915. The name Filoli is derived from the first two letters of each word in the Bourns’ motto: “Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life.”
The estate features a 36,000 square foot Georgian Revival-style mansion, which is surrounded by sixteen acres of formal gardens. The gardens were designed by renowned landscape architect Beatrix Farrand in the early 20th century, and they are considered one of the finest examples of her work. The gardens include a rose garden, a sunken garden, a walled garden, a knot garden, and many other features.
In addition to the gardens, Filoli estate also includes a nature preserve with over 500 acres of land that is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, bobcats, and mountain lions. The estate is open to the public for tours and events, and it is a popular spot for weddings and other special occasions.
Filoli Garden has been designated a National Trust Historic Site and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is considered one of the most beautiful and historic estates in California, and it attracts visitors from all over the world who come to admire its gardens, architecture, and rich history.
